The message TONER LOW appears on the display when one of the toner cartridges is running low on toner, but the cartridge has not reached its end of life. This is just an alert that the toner cartridge will reach its end of life in the near future. You do NOT have to install a new toner cartridge and you can still print when the TONER LOW message appears, but it is a good idea to have a new genuine Brother toner cartridge on hand for when the toner does reach its end of life. When the toner cartridge reaches its end of life, the LCD will display TONER LIFE END and the machine will stop printing until a replacement toner cartridge is installed.
However, since you have replaced the toner cartridge and the TONER LOW message continues to appear after installing the replacement toner cartridge, answer the following questions:
A. Was the cartridge replaced and immediately after replacing the cartridge, TONER LOW continued to appear? This means the TONER LOW message NEVER cleared. Either no pages were printed or some pages were printed after the new cartridge was installed, BUT the TONER LOW message NEVER CLEARED.
OR
B. Was the cartridge replaced and cleared TONER LOW, but the message returned after some usage of the new toner? This means a new cartridge was installed and the TONER LOW message cleared. Then, after printing some pages, TONER LOW re-appeared on the LCD.
If the answer is A, go to STEP 1.
If the answer is B, refer to the solution - I recently installed the starter or a new toner cartridge and I don't think I got the full yield from the toner. What can I do?
1. Confirm the color toner currently displayed on the LCD is the same color as the toner cartridge that was replaced. Be sure to read the entire message currently on the LCD (Ex: TONER LOW, Prepare New Black (k) Toner Cartridge.)
- If YES, the color toner currently on the LCD is the same color toner that was replaced, go to STEP 2.
- If NO, the color currently on the LCD is NOT the same color toner that was replaced, it appears that after the replacement toner cartridge was installed, a new message appeared for a different color toner. Go to solution How do I clear the message TONER LOW from the display? (black, cyan, yellow, magenta)
2. Was a NEW, out of the box, genuine Brother toner cartridge (TN110 or TN115) installed as a replacement toner or was a used genuine Brother toner from another machine was installed?
If you choose to install a replacement when TONER LOW appears, a brand new, out of the box genuine Brother toner MUST be installed to clear the TONER LOW message. Do NOT install a previously used or installed toner cartridge from another machine. Our toner cartridges are manufactured with a reset lever that moves when installed into the machine and notifies the machine a new cartridge has been installed. This mechanically triggers the machine to reset the toner low message. If a used cartridge is installed into a machine that needs to be reset, the used cartridge lever is NOT in the proper position to trigger the machine to reset and the error will not clear from the display. The same applies if a non-genuine Brother toner cartridge is installed. It may not have the proper mechanism to reset the machine.
- If a brand new, out of the box genuine Brother toner was installed, go to STEP 3.
- If a used genuine Brother toner or a non-genuine Brother toner was installed, remove it and install a new, out of the box genuine Brother toner cartridge to clear the message. After installing a new out of the box, genuine Brother replacement toner, your issued should be resolved.
Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.
3. Do the following:
a. Press the front door release handle located above the Brother logo and open the front door.
b. Lift up on the green handle, pull toward you, and slide out the drum unit until it stops. (The green handle has a sticker of a black circle with a white number 1 on it.)
c. Remove the toner cartridge by grasping the handle and pulling straight up on the cartridge you want to remove.
d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. Redistributing the toner may clear the message when the drum and toner assembly is reinstalled into the machine.
NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge(s) carefully. If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.
e. Reinstall the toner cartridge by holding the handle of the cartridge and sliding the toner cartridge into the drum unit. Match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit and fold down the toner cartridge handle (A) once the toner cartridge is in place.
f. Push the drum unit into the machine until it stops and close the front cover.
